How to build deeper connections with ourselves?

Kabir, the 15th-century Indian mystic and poet, wrote many dohas (couplets) on the theme of self-awareness. One of his famous dohas on this topic is:

“मोती हारत अंगूठी, मन की जानत न धारी।

ज्ञानी होत तो ऐसा, रहत जानत अपनी जाड़ी॥”

This can be translated as:

“You wear a pearl necklace and a ring,

But you do not know the state of your own mind.

If you were truly wise,

You would remain aware of your own actions.”

This doha highlights the importance of self-awareness. Kabir is saying that even if we wear expensive jewelry and adornments, if we are not aware of our own thoughts and actions, we cannot be considered truly wise. He encourages us to cultivate self-awareness so that we can better understand ourselves and our place in the world. This self-awareness can help us make better decisions, build better relationships, and lead a more fulfilling life.

Building a deeper connection with ourselves is an ongoing and personal process that can involve various practices and approaches. Here are some tips that can help:

  1. Practice self-awareness: Pay attention to your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors without judgment. This can help you gain a better understanding of yourself and your needs.
  2. Engage in self-care: Take care of your physical, emotional, and mental health by engaging in activities that nourish your body, mind, and soul. This can include activities like exercise, meditation, journaling, or spending time in nature.
  3. Set intentions: Set clear intentions for what you want to achieve or experience in life. This can help you stay focused and motivated towards your goals.
  4. Cultivate self-compassion: Be kind and compassionate towards yourself, just as you would towards a close friend. This can help you build a positive relationship with yourself and boost your self-esteem.
  5. Practice self-reflection: Take time to reflect on your experiences, successes, and challenges. This can help you gain insights into yourself and your life, and learn from your experiences.
  6. Connect with your values: Identify your core values and live in alignment with them. This can help you live a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
  7. Seek support: Reach out to friends, family, or professionals for support and guidance when needed. This can help you navigate difficult times and build a stronger connection with yourself.

Self-awareness is important because it enables individuals to recognize and understand their own thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. By being self-aware, individuals can better understand their strengths and weaknesses, which can lead to more effective decision-making and better outcomes.

Here are some specific reasons why self-awareness is needed:

  1. Personal growth and development: Self-awareness is a key factor in personal growth and development. When individuals are aware of their own thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, they can make positive changes to improve themselves.
  2. Relationship building: Self-awareness is also important for building and maintaining healthy relationships. By understanding their own thoughts and feelings, individuals can communicate more effectively and respond to the needs of others in a more empathetic way.
  3. Better decision-making: When individuals are self-aware, they are better equipped to make decisions that align with their values and goals. This can lead to more fulfilling and satisfying outcomes.
  4. Improved mental health: Self-awareness can also contribute to improved mental health. When individuals are aware of their own thoughts and emotions, they can recognize when they are experiencing negative or unhelpful patterns of thinking and take steps to address them.

Self-awareness is important because it enables individuals to better understand themselves and the world around them, leading to better decision-making, healthier relationships, and a more fulfilling life.

Alan Watts says
“To have faith is to trust yourself to the water. When you swim you don’t grab hold of the water, because if you do you will sink and drown. Instead you relax, and float.”
